Shoes: Beginners Guide

Think of this as a Dear John letter for purchasing the right shoes, for the right occasion. This to the topics of both women and the general category of mens style.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I have seen a guy who looks good from the top down, then when I check out his shoes all respect goes out the window. No I’m not gay, just always on the lookout for what works and what doesn’t. Women are even worse, they”ll almost instinctively check out a guys shoes when they first meet him.

How do I know? I ask the girls I meet. The answer is 95% of the time a yes… so take note!

Firstly, I recommend staying away from cheap leather dress shoes. That $120 pair which you may think look flash are really going to look like a homeless person’s kicks after a month. Secondly, look after them. Polish them and take care of the leather.

Smart Casual
Boots & Loafers are the standard in this department. Pay careful attention to the toe’s. If you have narrow feet like myself, I suggest a finer toe. If you have a wider set foot, choose something rounder or square. Don’t go too square, shoes are for walking in, not digging holes. Keep detail to a minimum, you don’t want people in passing cars to notice them.

Work / Dress Shoes
Spend a little more on dress shoes which wear well and won’t look shit after a week. Anything Italian is a good start, although some brands like Kenneth Cole make great middle of the road shoes too. Avoid anything large and bulky, they will only ruin any chance you have of looking sharp in your suit. Subtle classic styling is the key when choosing both smart casual and dress shoes.

Runners / Sneakers

Never wear runners when you’re going out, unless it’s to a rave. If you’re going to wear them, keep them clean and get new ones when they begin to show signs of Iwearthesetoomuchitis. Dsquared make some cool ones, as do Adidas Originals and the Nike throwback models are fresh.

So there you have it, a beginners guide to choosing a pair of shoes which will not only look good but improve your chances with the ladies.
