The Bangkok Suit

Ever wondered whether it's wise to buy a suit from one of the many tailors you see in Asian countries? The thoughts of "it will probably look like I'm wearing a teabag" often came to my mind.

Fear not, recently I put this to the test and returned from a jaunt in Thailand with some reasonable suits, which fitted well and looked dapper with the right shirt / shoe combo.

Here's the checklist which should help you out.

• Always get recommended a tailor, either by a friend, otherwise do some research online or via the hotel's concierge.
• Make sure you know what style of suit you're after. 2 button, box, etc...
• Take some picture, or make sure they have some pictures there from RECENT magazines.
• Choose better quality material (preferably Italian made). It will last longer and be suited for colder climates. This will cost more but be worth it in the long run.
  
• Have a few fittings to make sure the pants and jacket fit perfectly. One fitting will not be enough. Even look back at the pictures you brought to make sure they're right.
  
• Go easy on the shoulder padding, too much make the arms look odd if you're going for a slim fitting suit.
  
• Ask them not to put the shop's tag on the inside... for no other reason than you don't need it. It will make the suit look cheap (well, cheaper than it already is).
• Always haggle! they will quote you a cheap price at first then sting you double when you choose the more expensive fabric.
  

For the cost of getting 1 or 2 suits, it's worth the exercise.
