18 Best Men’s Fragrances (2011 Edition)

Whether you’re an Old Spice or a Brut 33 kind of guy, you know the importance of smelling nice. We challenge you to take it one step further and sample some of the finest men’s aftershave on the market. These colognes are guaranteed to make you smell like an interesting, worldly and ruggard gent. These scents were voted for by the D’Marge community.

Men’s Fragrance #1 – Christian Dior / Dior Homme Intense
The name says it all: Dior Homme Intense is an intense and sensual woody fragrance for men.  A masculine take on floral scents, this cologne opens with a Tuscan iris top note.  Subtle, musky accents of hibiscus seed compliment the iris, while an accord of precious wood (Virginia cedar and vetiver) gives the cologne a strong yet refined aroma. (My personal favourite)

Men’s Fragrance #2 – Comme Des Garçons 2
The second signature fragrance from Comme Des Garçons is a modern take on men’s cologne.  Scents of incense, patchouli, and amber are blended with citrusy aldehydes and spicy hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.  The real standout, though, is ink.  Inspired by the art of calligraphy, 2′s notes of ink are a quirky tribute to the legendary Sumi ink made in the temples of Japan. Another favourite aftershave. Price: $81 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #3 – Christian Dior / Dior Homme Sport
Dior Homme Sport is a woody, aromatic cologne that mixes ginger, bergamot, grapefruit, rosemary, lavender, cedar, and sandalwood.  Created by Francois Demachy in 2008 as a tribute to the sport of racing, Dior Homme Sport combines earthy, herbal scents with energising fresh citrus and spiced ginger influences.  It’s the perfect aftershave for a life in the fast lane. Price: $120 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #4 – DSQUARED2 / He Wood Ocean Wet Wood
Launched under the slogan “Nature Always Wins,” DSQUARED2′s He Wood Ocean Wet Wood distills the beauty of nature into a designer bottle.  The fragrance is a synthesis of three influences: ocean notes of marine accords and ambergris, moist notes of musk and violet, and woody notes of vetiver and cedar.  It’s an olfactory journey through the woods, across the creek, and onto the beach. Price: $70 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #5 – Terre D’Hermes
Terre D’Hermes begins as a sparkling citrus scent, then transforms into a symphony of earth, wood, rock, and greenery.  Created by Jean-Claude Ellena, Terre D’Hermes cologne includes fruity notes of grapefruit and orange, accents of rose and geranium, and a strong influence of pepper and cedar.  The cologne ends on a smoky, mineral note, with a hint of flint and gunpowder. Price: $80 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #6 – Acqua Di Parma Colonia
With top notes of bergamot, orange, and lemon, middle notes of rose and lavender, and base notes of patchouli, moss, and white musk, Acqua Di Parma Colonia is a timeless fragrance.  Crisp, clean, and elegant, Colonia has won admiration from some of history’s most admired style icons, from Cary Grant, to Ava Gardner, to Audrey Hepburn. Men’s Fragrance #7 – Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
Provocative and charismatic, Tom Ford’s Grey Vetiver is a highly-sough-after take on the vetiver cologne.  The scent revolves around the ultra-pure essence of its namesake, then is enhanced by elements of orange flower, grapefruit, aromatic sage, orris, nutmeg, pimento, amber woods, and oak moss.  Ideal cologne for the man who is looking for something both unique and classic. Price: $100 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #8 – Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme
Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme is a contemporary blend of imagination and tradition.  The fragrance features a warm, intense, and sensual scent that typifies the brand’s history of luxury, and a sleek bottle that epitomises Gucci’s style.  Masculine floral notes of violet and bergamot blend with unique notes of incense, leather, and tobacco to create a sensory experience that is quintessentially Gucci. Price: $90 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #9 – CREED / Bois du Portugal
Powdery, earthy, and woody, Bois du Portugal by CREED was inspired by the fragrant trees of Portugal.  Take note of the word “millesime” on the bottle – the millesime designation is used to signify that the best crops from a particular year’s harvest were used to create that bottle of the cologne.  This strong cologne is rumoured to have been enjoyed by Kevin Costner, Paul Newman, and Frank Sinatra. Price: $200 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #10 – Tom Ford / Oud Wood
A woody scent blended with spice and vanilla, Oud Wood is part of Tom Ford’s exclusive Private Blend collection.  Ford’s artisanal scents break the boundaries of mainstream fragrance to explore new horizons that stimulate, challenge, and enchant.  Rosewood, cardamom, and Chinese pepper combine with the strong influence of rare oud wood, then tonka bean and vanilla are revealed to end on a softer note. Price: $250

Men’s Fragrance #11 – Chanel / Allure Homme Sport
A crisp, fresh scent in an eye catching metallic bottle.  As a sharper fragrance than its predecessor, Allure Homme, Allure Homme Sport begins with marine and aldehydic notes then deepens into a woodsy and spicy fragrance. Designed by Jacques Polge, the famous nose of Chanel, this cologne is both casual and sensual. Price: $125 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #12 – Yves Saint Laurent / La Nuit De L’Homme
It’s not just the striking hexagonal design that distinguishes this cologne.  Yves Saint Laurent’s La Nuit De L’Homme is an homage to the mysteries of the night.  It’s dark, sophisticated, and intensely seductive.  Unlike other fragrances that try to be all things at once, to go anywhere at any time,  La Nuit De L’Homme is  an unapologetically nocturnal blend of bergamot, ginger, basil, cedar, violet leaf, vetiver and tonka bean. Price: $85 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #13 – Viktor & Rolf Antidote
The first men’s fragrance from Viktor & Rolf calls itself the “magical elixir that turns all that’s negative into positive and evokes joy, wonder, love and success.”  It’s a big claim, but Antidote delivers.  The fragrance opens with a burst of mint leaves and Italian bergamot, then introduces spicy hints of black pepper and cinnamon, and finally yields to the warmth and sophistication of sandalwood, ebony and patchouli. Price: $85 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #14 – Givenchy / Play Intense
The first thing you notice about Givenchy’s Play Intense is the packaging, which is designed to look like an mp3 player.  The second is its hip and modern take on men’s fragrance, a warm mix of Amyris wood, mandarin orange, pink pepper, coffee wood accord, and tonka bean.  Strong, dynamic, and offbeat, this cologne is perfect for the man who wants to experiment with a more edgy scent. Price: $80 BUY

Men’s Fragrance #15 – Givenchy / Pi Neo
Givenchy scores another hit with adventurous men with Pi Neo, a scent that celebrates freedom and individuality.  Inspired by The Matrix, Pi Neo is a futuristic take on men’s fragrance that features notes of toscanol, myrtle, patchouli, mandarin, bergamot, myrrh, and cedar.  Like the fictional world it was modeled after, this cologne is precise, scientific, and innovative. Men’s Fragrance #16 – Chanel / Bleu de Chanel
Chanel stands for classic elegance, but this scent defies convention.  Another creation of Jacques Polge, Bleu de Chanel blends citrus (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit) with peppermint, pink pepper, nutmeg, ginger, jasmine, cedar, vetiver, patchouli, labdanum, and frankincense.  A “deep blue sea” accord finishes off this fragrance, giving it a sporty, marine vibe.
