V8 Supercars driver James Courtney has been taken to hospital after a freak accident in pit lane saw him sustain two broken ribs and serious chest injuries.
The incident happened when a low flying Navy Black Hawk helicopter flew too low in pitlane, causing a draft to pick up metal dividers in the garage before hurling it into Courtney’s torso.
The sickening Sydney Motorsport Park incident left him struggling to breathe for a few minutes before he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a pneumothorax – a small pocket of air in the chest.
Both the Australian Military and the V8 Supercars are now investigating the incident which has taken the driver out of contention for this weekend’s race and ended his 2015 championship dream.
Holden team boss Adrian Burgess expressed his concern revealing that Courtney was in trouble and couldn’t breathe.
“I know him better than most people and I could see he was in a lot of pain.”
The 35-year-old driver is now recovering in hospital and making the most of the situation with painkiller jokes.
