In case you haven’t heard, today is R U OK? day.
After Barry Larkin’s 1995 suicide left his family and friends in deep grief, son Gavin chose to champion just one question to honour his father and protect other families from the pain he endured. And so in 2009, R U OK? was born.
R U OK? is a non-for-profit organisation with a mission to encourage and equip everyone to regularly and meaningfully ask “are you ok?”. After all, some of the world’s smartest people have been working tirelessly and developed credible theories that suggest there’s power in the simplest of questions.
Even our homegrown heroes can struggle with their mental health. Just take Buddy Franklin for example.
R U OK? is just one of many movements that are rallying support for suicide prevention. Power Of The Tribe, for instance, is a blog created by Lauren Sommerville, dedicated to spreading love, appreciation and understanding, and helping to reduce the amount of lives lost to suicide.
Lauren says, “The way we communicate and engage with the world everyday has the potential to save a life. Together we can bring power back to people’s lives, together we can show our mates that our tribe needs their vibe.”
Today’s the day. Call your buddies and ask the question.
