IWC Schaffhausen have again looked to the skies for inspiration on their latest special 2015 Big Pilot timepiece. Set in a limited run of just 250 watches, the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition ‘Patrouille Suisse’ is inspired by the high-flying excellence of the Patrouille Suisse, an aerobatic team of the Swiss Air Force founded in 1964.
The design of the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” (Ref. IW500910) is a stunning display of fine craftsmanship that makes this piece instantly recognisable amongst other Big Pilots.
It features a 51011 calibre – the largest automatic movement manufactured in-house by IWC Schaffhausen and merges all of the features that have graced the coveted history of IWC timepieces.
The spring-mounted rotor and Pellaton pawl-winding system allows for a power reserve of over 7 days. Intuitive design also ensures that after exactly 168 hours, the movement is mechanically halted by an ingenious train in the power reserve. IWC designed the mechanism this way to stop the movement before all the tension in the spring has been exhausted, hence eliminating the danger of diminishing torque in the mainspring.
A 46mm case faithfully encloses a soft-iron cage which shields the mechanism from magnetic fields and unwanted interference.
