Everyone’s favourite Rugby turned NFL player, Jarryd Hayne, is all set for his debut as part of the San Francisco 49ers. Whether he will play in the team’s season-opener against the Minnesota Vikings is another question.
With only four days until the first game of the season, the 49ers have dropped several not so subtle hints that Hayne won’t feature. In fact, the team have up until 90 minutes before kick-off to name the active players of the match and coach Thomas McGaughey has been suggesting Hayne won’t make the cut due to inexperience.
“Everybody is flying the Hayne Plane right now, but if you look at who led our team in punt returns in the pre-season, it wasn’t Jarryd Hayne,” McGaughey said when he fronted the media.
While coaches have acknowledged Hayne’s achievements, they aren’t jumping at the opportunity to talk the 27-year-old ex-Parramatta Eels player up too much.
“We have to keep everything in perspective…take it all with a grain of salt, move forward and as the weeks go on and things start to progress, then we’ll address it then.”
Only time will tell if the boy from Minto will make his first step onto the field when the 49ers go head-to-head with the Vikings next week.
