‘Mission complete’ is a phrase Jarryd Hayne will be repeating for a while as news came overnight that he has made the final 53-man roster to play for the San Francisco 49ers.
Marking one of the greatest code switches in the history of the sport (Hayne announced he was moving from Rugby to the NFL only under a year ago) the talented player from South Western Sydney made an emotional message via his social media when this announcement was made:
IT ALWAYS WORKS OUT! I thank GOD for WHAT HE has done and going to do on this incredible journey!! I’m on the 53 MAN ROSTER FOR THE #49ers.

In an interview with reporters, Hayne expressed his emotions after the announcement of his arrival in the NFL.
“Yeah, I did [cry],” Hayne said.
“I think it was more when I was talking to my agent [Jack Bechta] about everything we’ve been through. Getting set up, not knowing what’s going to be the next day, not knowing where I was going.”
“This journey isn’t a journey where I just woke up and wanted to be an NFL player. It’s been a long process. And with long processes comes a lot of dark days, a lot of joyful days and a lot of things that are emotional. Whenever I start talking about things that I have been through or the people who have helped me along the way, that’s when the emotions get stirred up.”

The former Parramatta Eels player explained that the wait for the news was no easy process, giving an insight into the cut-throat nature of the NFL.
“Yeah it was [nerve-racking]. Probably the last 10 minutes I was like ‘what’s going on, do I get a phone call? Is someone going to tell me that I have a job or not? So that was probably the first time I’ve been nervous in a while,” Hayne said.
“There’s obviously some excitement as well, just waited out. In NFL the way to do things if you haven’t received a call by one, you’re at training on Monday.”
“It was more trying to get confirmation more than anything. Yes? No? What’s happening? Is something going on? I just called my agent and he brought the good news. It was a sigh of relief. It was good to have mum and the girls over here, I was pretty pumped.”
“It was probably quarter past one when I called my agent and said ‘what’s the latest? what’s going on’. That was the thing and he confirmed it. I was obviously over the moon. We were at a museum and coach (Jim Tomsula) tried to call me and sent me a text, pretty much just got out and seen his text. He said congrats and it’s just the start, which it is.”
If Hayne is right about one thing, it’s that this most certainly is just the beginning of his fairytale. Such is the excitement from the NFL mecca of Hayne Plane’s arrival that they’ve even created an 88-second video showing his past talents to welcome the Aussie.
