With the sad news that Daniel Craig is all but done with his stellar role as the British spy, speculation has been rife over his successor to play James Bond.
According to Mashable, fellow British actor Tom Hardy is currently the crowd favourite amongst serious punters, edging out other contenders like Idris Elba and Damian Lewis.
To add even more controversy to the saga, James Bond’s own author Anthony Horowitz has been reported as saying Elba was “too street” to play the suave role.
This garnered him quite a bit of backlash from the public and subsequently led to an apology on Horowitz’s behalf – and a well-played tongue-in-cheek response from Elba via Instagram:
Hardy already possesses solid credentials when it comes to action films, having starred in huge hits such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and most recently as the lead of Mad Max: Fury Road, so taking on the iconic role should not be an issue for the 37-year-old actor.
Whether or not he gets it will be another story.
