V8 Supercars driver David Reynolds has been slapped with a $25,000 fine ahead of the Bathurst 1000 final round this weekend. The driver made a crude joke about the series’ all-female race team, referring to the car being driven by Simona de Silvestro and Renee Gracie as a “pussy wagon”.
V8 Supercars boss James Warburton acted swiftly to reprimand Reynolds’ words, calling it “disgraceful”.
“Reynolds’ comments were disgraceful and completely unacceptable in our sport and he has been fined $25,000,” Warburton said.
“Women are an integral part of our sport, whether they are fans, drivers or team members. And V8 Supercars will continue to support and promote female participation at all levels of our sport.”
Reynolds who is often known for his controversial humour changed his tone after the incident saying, “I think they are great. They are good drivers. I really hope they do well.”
The duo have already faced some criticism from the competition with veteran driver Dick Johnson saying that it’d be “a million to one” chance that the pair would finish the race. As of Thursday practice, the female duo sliced two-seconds off their best lap time to finish second last in the field of 26 cars.
Gracie and de Silvestro hit back at the racing great by saying “Dick Johnson hasn’t finished heaps of races so he can’t talk.”
One thing is guaranteed and that’s a great fight this weekend.
