Winner of an unprecedented eight world titles, Manny Pacquiao is hanging up his boxing gloves for a career in politics. The 36-year-old, who has been a congressman since 2010, says he’s taken career advice from God and plans to run for Senator of The Philippines in the next election.
“I think I’m ready (to retire). I’ve been boxing for more than 20 years,” Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao is a true rags-to-riches success story. A former street vendor, the boxing champ turned professional at just 16 years old and has since won 57 fights, including 38 knockouts. He’s also an unlikely pro basketball player and Christian pastor.
This May, Pacquiao lost to unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather in boxing’s fight of the century and while he is yet to choose his next opponent, the pint-sized Philippine idol plans to climb into the ring once more before retiring.
