Richmond hotspot Swan Street continues to heat up with recent addition of new cocktail and wine bar The Ugly Duckling, which is anything but ugly.
Located at the former site of Melbourne’s first department store Balls Corner, The Ugly Duckling is a perfect combination of high-end residential living with an intimate, yet sophisticated design aesthetic.
It’s charming, light-filled rear seating area brings the outside in with an original heritage-listed central glass atrium and black framed Raphia chair nestled under trees.
Described by Hamish Guthrie of Hecker Guthrie, as “all that is quintessentially Melbourne: clean, yet theatrical design, with nods to the past a touch of nature, designed to mimic the natural feel of a conservatory”, The Ugly Duckling mixes refined industrial detailing with unexpected playful moments.
And that’s just the decor.
Featuring a specially curated wine list, custom cocktails and neat pours, The Ugly Ducking showcases a selection of local and international beverages supported by experienced sommeliers. Antipasto style food, including warm olives, charcuterie, cheese boards and chocolate complement perfectly and make it the perfect place for a pre-dinner aperitivo or a post dinner drink.
The brains behind the bar are David Abela (Founder of 3 Degrees Marketing), Andrew Ryan (Managing Director of Mitchelton Wines and Director of Melbourne Pub Group) and respected business and operations manager Daniel Vid.
