Val Kilmer’s antagonistic Ice Man will be returning for the hotly anticipated Top Gun sequel. Sort of.
The one time topless volleyball player and fighter pilot got the internet salivating when he prematurely announced his involvement in Top Gun 2 – even Tom Cruise hasn’t officially announced his involvement yet.
The over-excited actor made the announcement through his Facebook page stating: “Let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”. He added fuel to the post by saying that he had just been offered the role for the sequel and that it is “not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script”.
Kilmer was forced to retract the statement later, saying that he had “jumped the Top Gun” and that his jokes are shit. We made up that last bit. But in all seriousness, Kilmer also complicated Gene Hackman in the film as a starring character alongside Francis Coppola as the Director.
He later re-iterated that “being offered a role is very different from doing a role.”
“[It’s] an innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.”
Top Gun 2 is slated for production in 2016 and will focus on the end of the dog fighting era where drones and robotic warfare are superseding real pilots. Tom Cruise has said in the past that he will only return to a sequel if the original directors are at the helm, whilst the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer has publicly stated that there is no Top Gun 2 without Cruise.
How sweet. Now get working, lads. We feel the need…
