Eames Chair By 3Sixteen: A Hallmark of Mid Century Modernism

Full screen

Now, that’s a chair. This generation-defining design was originally produced by Herman Miller and envisioned by the iconic pairing of Ray and Charles Eames, but it’s timeless appeal has meant countless rip-offs. Until now.

A unique collaboration between Herman Miller and NYC-based design studio 3Sixteen, Eames original lounge chair has been reimagined in a special edition replica, outdoing all others. Particularly special due to the fact Herman Miller rarely partakes in collaborative projects, the 3Sixteen partnership merges the design studio’s luxury vegetable-tanned leather with Miller’s iconic hand-oiled Santos Palisander wood veneer shell for an Eames-inspired finish.

The best part of this striking lounge chair is its leather. Similar to 3Sixteen‘s revered raw denim, the leather hide of the chair is set to age beautifully over time with the natural vegetable tan forming wrinkles around the edges and corners – a tribute to Charles Eames quote that a chair should resemble ‘a well-used first baseman’s mitt.’

Nostalgia, meet modernity.
