The 718 nameplate is a formidable name in Porsche‘s rich racing heritage.
Dating back to the 1960s where it went up against some of the world’s best manufacturers, the 718 became synonymous with performance on the track. In 2016 however, the 718 moniker will be revived to set a new benchmark in production car performance.
Known only as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman thus far, Porsche is looking to inject some spark into the sports cars’ mid-cycle update. Naturally this update also comes with a teaser video which parades the announcement that “The legend 718 is about to return.”
Just like the 1960s 718 racecar, the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will also pack flat-four engines ranging from 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre displacements. Turbos will also be bolted on to ensure it can keep up with Porsche’s six-cylinder brethren.
The 718 cars are expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.
