Y-3 & Virgin Galactic To Design World’s First Space Apparel Collection

Full screen

Designer label Y-3 and Richard Branson‘s Virgin Galactic have partnered up to create the first ever clothing collection made for intergalactic travel.

The space apparel will include a prototype flight suit and boots. If the Y-3 name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the brainchild of Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas. With a wealth of experience in creating some of the world’s most innovative and comfortable luxury sportswear today, Y-3 will be looking to apply the same criteria to its flight suits.

Wearers can expect the suit to support an astronaut’s natural seating position without compromising on the areas of fit, comfort and performance. Construction of the suits will rely on fireproof Nomex Meta Aramid materials derived from a 3D-engineered pattern which the Virgin Galactic team have already been testing with their pilots.

The Y-3 flight boot will marry Nomex materials with a special TRAXION outsole which will provide pilots with unprecedented levels of grip in zero gravity environments. An additional adiPRENE heel insert will serve as enhanced comfort and shock absorption for the wearer.

If that’s not enough, Y-3 and Virgin Galactic have even created bespoke jackets for the first passengers who will be on Virgin Galactic’s maiden flight into orbit. Watch the video below to find out more on how the apparel was created.
