‘Google Now’ Makes A Smart Mirror Straight Out Of Sci-Fi

We’ve smartened phones. We’ve smartened watches. What’s next? If you’re Google software engineer Max Braun, it’s your bathroom mirror.

Braun used Google Now, Google’s voice-activated digital assistant, to create a smart mirror that provides useful updates in real-time. In a Medium post, he explains what inspired the project and how he built his futuristic accessory.

“I wanted my ordinary bathroom mirror to be more like the future we were promised in the movies,” he writes. When he couldn’t find the product already on the market, he ordered a two-way mirror, a display panel and controller board, plus a bunch of components and arts and crafts supplies.

In its current iteration, the smart mirror displays the time, date, current weather, 24-hour forecast and a selection of recent news headlines. Braun is also toying with adding “traffic, reminders, and essentially anything that has a Google Now card.”
