Spanish clothing and accessories retailer, Zara, brought its brand of affordable and stylish fast fashion to the welcoming shores of Australia in 2011 and is satisfying the retail hungry public in 2,000 locations around the world. But did you know that we’ve all been pronouncing the brand’s name wrong the whole time?
According to Refinery 29, who have been hanging out with the Zara team in A Coruña, located on the northernmost tip of Spain, the way we’ve all been pronouncing ‘Zara’ is very different to the Spanish.
Phonetically, the word is actually pronounced “dzah-dah“. A North Castilian dialect means that Z’s are pronounced with a soft “th” sound, and R’s are closer to D’s.
So if you’re a bit OCD when it comes to speech, and you want to honour Zara’s roots, be a trendsetter and start using the correct pronunciation. It’ll either win you brownie points with the fashion elite or confuse the hell out of everyone you meet.
