Brooklyn-based designers Heavy Eyes have given a medieval tradition a modern look. The studio’s slick take on the memento mori is a life-sized skull made of premium leather.
For those who don’t remember their history lessons, memento mori is Latin for “remember that you must die.” They are meant to encourage reflection on the inevitability of death and the transient nature of earthly life, and as such frequently took the form of skulls.
Then again, if displaying a morbid reminder of mortality on your shelf isn’t your idea of ace interior design, the pieces from Heavy Eyes are beautiful enough to serve as simple art objects and conversation pieces. The skulls come in either black leather or natural vegetable tanned leather that’s been folded and secured with bolts for a cool, industrial aesthetic. Each memento mori sculpture retails for US$180.
