This is not a drill. Arnold Schwarzenegger could be returning to one of his most iconic roles as Dutch in a proper sequel to the 1987 sci-fi action film, Predator.
20th Century Fox have already enlisted the talents of Shane Black to direct and co-write the new Predator film with the help of The Monster Squad writer, Fred Dekker.
Black is in no way a flash in the pan talent in Hollywood – unbeknownst to some, he also played Hawkins in the first Predator movie and wrote the first and second Lethal Weapon films. Most recently he wrote and directed the successful Iron Man 3 film for Marvel. This is a good sign.
With him on board, things are looking true to form for Arnie to make a return to take on the “ugly motherfucker”. Fox have already unveiled a promo poster with the film being tentatively named The Predator with a release date of March 2, 2018. The production company also stressed that this will be a proper sequel and not a reboot or extension to the franchise.
Even the big man himself chimed in, speaking to The Arnold Fans via The Playlist. Schwarzenegger revealed that he will be having a lunch meeting with Black where the two will undoubtedly talk about the sequel.
In the statement, Schwarzenegger said:
“I haven’t talked with [Shane Black] yet but I’m going to meet with him for lunch sometime soon. Just as soon as I’m finished with [Arnold’s Sports Festival] and The Apprentice and all this stuff. But I will get together with him. If there is any news, we’ll of course let you know right away. There’s also a meeting coming up soon about Conan, about the project moving forward.”
It’s also important to note that having Schwarzenegger reprise a famous role doesn’t always equal success. His recent Terminator films haven’t exactly been the best but with Black and Dekker’s involvement, they could breathe new life into the film.
Back to the chopper? Here’s hoping.
