‘Star Wars‘ has definitely come a long way since dodgy special effects and damsels and distress. During interviews this week, ‘Star Wars’ director J.J. Abrams announced that the franchise will be inclusive and feature openly gay characters in the future.
“It seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world,” Abrams was quoted saying. ‘Star Wars’ already made a big step towards inclusivity when the franchise’s latest installment ‘The Force Awakens‘ featured black and female leads played by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. There was, in fact, rumours of a gay romance between Finn and Poe in the film.
It’s also not the first time ‘Star Wars’ has made reference to homosexuality. The novel ‘Star Wars: Aftermath’, released last year by author Chuck Wendig introduced a major gay character in the Star Wars universe, Sinjir Rath Velus. Even the novel ‘Lords of the Sith’ by Paul S. Kemp released last April made reference to the character Moff Delian Mors, a lesbian Imperial officer who felt adrift when her wife was killed in an accident.
Clearly, it’s high time we open our minds in a galaxy far away.
