Don’t be fooled by the name. Batman: The Killing Joke is no laughing matter. The original story is one of the most highly regarded, and also highly controversial, graphic novels of all time. And by the looks of the first trailer for the R-rated animated adaptation, there will be no sugarcoating of the dark and brutal tale.
Kevin Conroy will return as Batman with Mark Hamill reprising his role of the criminally deranged Joker. Since making their debuts during Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, the duo have voiced their characters for more than two decades. This time around they’re telling the Joker’s origin story – a story that, even by his psychotic standards, is totally effed up.
We don’t want to spoil it for anyone who isn’t familiar with the source material, but we will say that when the Joker is out to prove anyone can go insane with just “one bad day,” nothing is off limits.
The Killing Joke will bow this year at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and could easily be one of the most terrifying depictions yet of Gotham’s clown prince.
