It’s all about the performance SUVs and supercars for this week’s edition of best motoring news. If it’s performance you’re after, look no further than Aston Martin who are gearing up two of their race cars for road legal duties. If you’re more the off-roading man, Jaguar and Maserati have you sorted with high-powered variants of their SUVs currently in the works. Welcome to the hottest motoring news of the week.
#1 Aston Martin Vantage GT8 Goes Street Legal
Aston Martin are turning dreams into reality with a new street legal car based off their dedicated track warrior. The Aston Martin Vantage GT8 is the spawn of the track-only V8 Vantage GTE. To get past the red tape of getting such a car onto public roads, the British car maker had to modify their 440hp 4.7-litre V8 as well as providing an option of a six-speed manual or seven-speed Sportshift transmission over the sequential box. The winner here of course is the drastic weight reduction which sees plenty of carbon fibre panels including a front splitter, diffuser, an optional rear wing and roof. Inside the car still gets creature comforts like air-conditioning and an infotainment system. Think of this as a hardcore version of a fully loaded Vantage.
#2 Ferrari Goes Old School With 488 GTB
Ferrari have taken their supercar of the moment and given it the heritage treatment with a throwback to Jean Claude Andruet’s Tour de France Automobile winning 308 GTB. The car itself took out two victories in the early 80s before the event folded and subsequently left Ferrari with one of the most recognisable liveries of the time. The new 488 GTB paid tribute to this in Paris in a cool photoshoot and promo video which you can see here.
#3 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Is On Its Way
When chauffeuring the family becomes a chore, it’s time to upgrade to something a little more special. Luckily the good people at Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations have been tinkering away at some high performance models. The one you need to know about? The F-Pace SVR SUV. The current variant sees 380hp with a supercharged V6 but the boffins at SVR are planning to squeeze in a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 with 575hp. That will send the big cat into Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, BMW X5 M, and Mercedes-AMG GLE63 territory when it arrives. And we certainly can’t wait.
#4 High Performance Maserati Levante Is On Its Way
Thought Jaguar was the only one who could play in the performance SUV segment? Guess again. The Italian luxury marquee is already working on a go-fast version which will see the standard 3.0-litre V6 be replaced by a 3.8-litre 528 horsepower V8. When queried on whether the bigger engine would fit into the car, Maserati executive Davide Danesin confirmed with Autoblog that it will and they’ve already got an existing prototype. Family fun times ahead.
#5 Aston Martin Vulcan Could Become Street Legal
The Aston Martin Vulcan is one of the marque’s boldest and most expensive marketing initiatives to date; a car designed to showcase what Aston Martin is capable with zero compromise. This brief meant that the multi-million dollar car could only be acquired by an exclusive few whilst only being a track driven car. Well that’s all about to change with Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer revealing that British engineering company RML will be modifying 4-5 Vulcans for street use. The modifications will involve looking at the car’s safety and tweaking its handling credentials for various road surfaces. All you’ll now is $4.2 million to buy one.
