Cristiano Ronaldo can usually be found in a buoyant mood but on this particular occasion where one unlucky reporter asked him a question he didn’t want to answer, his microphone went flying into the depths of the local lake.
The CMTV reporter approached Ronaldo and his posse a day before Portugal faced Hungary at the Euro 2016 and after the team’s disappointing tie against Iceland.
Notably still frustrated from the game and the fact that he has yet to score for his home team in Euro 2016, Ronaldo made some scathing comments about his underdog competitors.
“Iceland didn’t try anything,” Ronaldo told the Daily Mirror.
“It was a lucky night for them. We should have three points, but we are OK. I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end. It was just unbelievable. When they don’t try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this in my opinion shows a small mentality and are not going to do anything in the competition.”
It’s a far cry from his inspirational and comedic Nike story, but here’s hoping for more gold (and wayward microphones) to come from the tournament as Portugal rolls through its group in Euro 2016.
