Old trends die hard and just when you thought the eighth instalment of The Fast & Furious franchise would fizzle out, they announce that award-winning actress Helen Mirren will be joining the stellar cast.
Before we go any further, let’s take a look at the current eclectic cast which already includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris Bridges, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood (son of Clint), Charlize Theron and now Dame Helen Mirren. The acclaimed actress made the straight forward announcement in ELLE magazine.
ELLE: “So you are confirmed to be in Fast 8?”
Mirren: “Yes, I am.”
Mirren also spoke about her love of driving and revealed that she agreed to do Fast 8 only if she was allowed to drive in it. It’s probably important to note that Mirren is also 70 this year. That’s right, a grandmother who can steer like a pro and kick your ass. More importantly, Mirren’s motivation to be involved with the popcorn flick is as genuine as it gets.
“Film is a wonderful thing and it can be so many different things,” she told the magazine.
“I don’t want to turn my back on any of the different ways movies can be. I love the movies. I love going to the films. I like very serious films, I love foreign films, and I love big, fun movies – as long as they’re well made and they’ve got good scripts. That’s the most important thing.”
And if you’re still scratching your head as to who Helen Mirren is, simply cast your eyes over some of the actress’ awards which includes an Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA, three Golden Globes, four Emmy Awards, five Screen Actors Guild awards, a Critic’s Circle Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. As well as that whole Dame thing.
It looks like it’ll be a cracking good time on the Fast 8 set, but if one were to ponder if Mirren could possibly keep up with the fast-paced nature of the films, they only need to watch this clip.
