Jake Gyllenhaal has seen a fair bit of success portraying one of video games’ greatest characters on the big screen. After taking the lead role in Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia back in 2010, the Southpaw star looks to be returning to the developer for his next big project in Tom Clancy’s The Division.
According to Variety, the video game adaption also brings with it news that Gyllenhaal will be producing as well as starring in the post apocalyptic action film. The story itself follows an outbreak of a deadly virus over New York which leaves the city deserted and the remaining authorities powerless to curb the city’s worst criminals who have taken over the region. From the rubble, an elite band of civilians form the resistance who are determined to take back a city on its knees.
If executed properly, the film should be a sure hit amongst fans since the game was one of Ubisoft’s fastest selling titles with over US$330M made in the first five days afer its debut. The Gyllenhaal-Clancy project follows closely behind Michael Fassbender’s take on Assassin’s Creed. Watch the game trailer below to see what The Division is all about.
