The muggy heat outdoors may have you tempted to stay inside and order Seamless, but a brand new crop of New York City restaurant openings awaits those who brave the weather.
The past month has seen the city’s ever-changing cuisine scene grow to include a medley of local and international fare. On the global front, look out for new Indian coming by way of Texas, East Asian eats inspired by Hong Kong, and a Nordic marketplace helmed by a superstar Danish chef.
Closer to home, an open air food hall in Noho is now home to mini renditions of beloved Big Apple establishments and a hyper-specific cafe is serving extravagant takes on a classic breakfast comfort food. Loosen your belt and get ready to feast at these freshly opened New York City food spots.
The Bowery Market
Replacing the former auto body shop at 348 Bowery is The Bowery Market, a year-round outdoor food alley. Five vendors have taken up residence in the space: Italian sandwich specialists Alidoro, taco purveyors Pulqueria, health nuts The Butcher’s Daughter, Greenpoint-faves Champion Coffee, and David Bouhadana’s Sushi on Jones. The Bowery Market, at Bowery and Great Jones Street, is now open daily from 8am to 9pm.
Beard-nominated chef Anita Jaisinghani brings her Texas-based Indian fare to NYC with Pondicheri, a 100-seat restaurant and bakery currently in its soft opening at 15 West 27th Street. Breakfast, lunch, and the signature pastry counter Bake Lab are currently available, with a more upscale dinner menu coming in the next few weeks. Expect a variety of experimental dishes that provide unexpected twists to traditional Indian foods and flavours.
Kellogg’s NYC, the cereal cafe co-owned and operated by Per Se alum Anthony Rudolf and partner Sandra Di Capua, has been the subject of plenty of press in its short life time. The good news: its handcrafted cereal creations come from Christina Tosi, the genius mind behind Momofuku Milk Bar. The bad news: a regular size bowl will set you back US$7.50 and you’ll have to brave Times Square to get it.
Hey Hey Canteen
Gowanus’ beloved 2 Duck Goose has given way to Hong Kong-inspired restaurant Hey Hey Canteen. The new joint, run by the former 2 Duck Goose team, serves up a smorgasbord of Asian dishes like seafood laksa, lemongrass chicken wings, and spicy matcha soba. The star of the menu is the ramen-crusted fried chicken sandwich, which reportedly took three months to perfect and is already getting raves.
Great Northern Food Hall
Noma cofounder Claus Meyer has finally unveiled the Great Northern Food Hall, a 5,000-square-foot Nordic marketplace, inside Grand Central Terminal. The hall’s five food pavilions include Grain Bar, vegetable-focused Almanak, pastries and breads at Meyers Bageri, a rotating selection of smørrebrød at Open Rye, and a seasonally-changing coffee program courtesy of Brownsville Roasters. There’s also a bar pouring local craft beers and Nordic-style cocktails.
