How high do you have to be to make an animated film about foul-mouthed food in the midst of an existential crisis? Since Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are the guys behind Sausage Party, it’s a safe bet the answer is “very.”
The flick follows an inquisitive sausage and a group of fellow supermarket staples as they discover the gruesome truth about what happens when they leave the shelves. Religious and socio-political themes pop up throughout the film, seasoned with all the sex, violence, swearing, and adolescent humour you’d expect from Seth and co.
Speaking to an audience at Comic-Con, Rogen said, “The day after we knew we wanted to make a movie about food, we decided food had to f— each other. We were like, ‘Someone is going to make an R-rated Pixar movie one day and I’m going to be pissed if we’re not the guys to do it.’”
A huge number of Hollywood heavyweights agreed. The Sausage Party cast list includes Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, James Franco, Michael Cera, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek.
The Comic-Con audience was reportedly charmed, as were early viewers at Variety, so perhaps there’s hope for this unapologetic bong rip of a film after all. Rogen’s fingers are crossed.
“It’s the first time we’ve ended a movie with the intention of making another one,” he said. “We have an idea of where we’d like it to go and we’d love to just make talking sausage movies for the rest of our lives. Who wouldn’t?”
Look for Sausage Party in cinemas starting in August.
