We’re back with another instalment of Brands To Know, and this week we’re all about emerging Australian designer Kiaya Daniels with a collection of striking menswear must-haves inspired by Australia; the land and the Australian man.
The Kiaya Daniels Story
Kiaya Daniels studied at the TAFE NSW Fashion Design Studio, but it was the time she spent working as a tailor in Melbourne that really changed her perspective on the Australian menswear market and her own design philosophy. After graduating in 2013, Kiaya Daniels was chosen to be part of The Innovators showcase at MBFWA 2014. The response to Daniels’ collection was overwhelming and gave the young designer the confidence to start her own label, a brand that merges clean tailoring with sportswear and streetwear elements for the Australian man.
The Kiaya Daniels Look
D’Marge spoke to Kiaya Daniels at MBFWA 2014 to get her take on the label and its ‘look’.
“It is largely the wearer that inspires Kiaya Daniels as a brand. I really wanted to develop a menswear label designed distinctly for the Australian market, creating directional, yet viable pieces. As much as I want to push boundaries with my designs, it is also so important to create designs with considered wearability. I am very interested in the end use of a garment, individual perceptions of a piece and individual styling. I find a lot of inspiration in street fashion, to develop pieces that would be inspiring for the wearer, as well as in the person and the outfit. I am not so much looking at the garments being worn, but at the way they are being worn.
Inspiration for collections can come from anywhere. The SS14 collection is about relaxed sophistication, merging clean tailoring with more casual sportswear – Individual pieces are inherently minimal with understated complexity. Originally inspired by the life and works of artist, Romaine Brooks, I was interested in exploring the societal boundaries of masculinity and re-evaluating the commonly regarded values of menswear,” Daniels said.
Kiaya Daniels SS16/17
This season Kiaya Daniels was inspired by her homeland for a range of menswear slightly more relaxed than previous collections, whilst maintaining the same design approach that has now become a signature for the brand.
“We shot the lookbook on a property in Maitland, a little outside Sydney. I wanted to capture the land that I was inspired by, whilst also creating imagery for the collection which could lie somewhere in-between a lookbook and campaign,” she said.
The collection features crisp menswear must-haves e.g. a white collared shirt, tailored shorts, classic outerwear and trousers with some unexpected details. A bold splash of colour here, a little quirky embroidery there and an emphasis on tailoring and you’ve got yourself a collection that definitely stands out from the rest this season.
