Christopher Nolan – A-list director of Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy – has released the first teaser trailer for his upcoming World War II flick, Dunkirk. Tense, chilling, and epic are the words that come to mind.
The film tells the story of Operation Dynamo, a last-ditch effort to evacuate 300,000 Allied troops who were surrounded by Nazi forces in the French seaport of Dunkirk. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance star along with Harry Styles (yes, the guy from One Direction), who takes his first stab at acting on the big screen.
Our first glimpse of the film is cryptic and eerie. After a seemingly innocent shot of sea foam, tension quickly mounts. The clip culminates with a crowded boat of petrified soldiers as they spot a potential threat overhead and duck. Boom – cliffhanger.
Dunkirk will be presented in 70mm, 35mm and IMAX formats. Super-cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the film, which explains why even this short teaser is a work of celluloid art. The bad news? You’ll have to wait a year to see it. Dunkirk isn’t due in theatres until July 2017.
