If you consider the fashion world to have been in its prime when women wore gloves and hats and men were dressed as dapper gents at all times, then there’s no doubt you’ll be familiar with the work of renowned fashion photographer Mark Shaw.
This week, a selection of Shaw’s work is coming to Sydney’s Becker Minty store, and will feature portraits of some of the world’s most famous faces including John F. Kennedy and then wife Jackie, Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Yves Saint Laurent, Nico of the Velvet Underground and Coco Chanel.
Mark Shaw was a celebrity and fashion photographer who worked at both Harper’s Bazaar and LIFE magazines, and closely with Dior from 1952 to 1962 where he garnered a reputation for his behind-the-scenes look at the world of haute couture and high society. Shaw’s work has become so coveted that he has become the subject of books and is collected privately by the likes of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston and Martha Stewart.
Shaw’s exhibition in Sydney kicks off on Thursday, August 4 and will be curated by store owner Jason Minty. “Although most of Mark’s images are directed specifically for magazine shoots, there are many that are a little more ‘in the moment’, often giving us a slightly more behind the scenes or more natural look into the chosen celebrity,” says Minty.
