“Do you ever feel like your life has turned into something you never intended?” With those ominous words, the trailer for Tom Ford’s new thriller, Nocturnal Animals, kicks off.
Like its predecessor (2009’s A Single Man starring Colin Firth), Ford’s second cinematic outing promises to be a feast for aesthetically-inclined eyes. There will be no shortage of exquisite costumes, attentively designed sets, and shots that look like they could be paintings. But unlike A Single Man, Nocturnal Animals takes a distinctly darker, more terrifying tone.
The story follows Susan, played by Amy Adams, a successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner and insomniac. Her ex-husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal) resurfaces after nearly two decades of silence with an unexpected gift: a violent novel that appears to be a thinly veiled threat of revenge for something that occurred during their marriage.
“I did something horrible to him,” she admits in the trailer.
Just what that bad thing is we have yet to discover, but early news is positive about the film. Nocturnal Animals won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival and was a hit at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival. The rest of the cast is also promising: Michael Shannon, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The pressure’s on to see if Tom Ford can top his superb debut. We’ll find out when Nocturnal Animals hits cinemas later this year.
