Bad news, Earth: as soon as Elon Musk sorts out his grand plan to bring humanity to Mars, a certain Hollywood star says he’ll be ditching our blue planet for the red one. Can you guess which A-lister wants to pull a Matt Damon?
Give yourself a gold star if you said Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor and eco-warrior visited the White House on Monday night to discuss climate change at the South by South Lawn event. Towards the end of the evening, he sat down with President Obama and climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe for a conversation on the subject. His new climate change documentary, Before the Flood, premiered following their discussion.
The subject of Mars and SpaceX came up when Dr. Hayhoe urged people to take action now, before climate change has an even more devastating impact on this little rock we call home.
“The reality of it is, if you’re a human living on this planet — which most of us are, yeah?” she joked. “As long as we haven’t signed up for the trip to Mars. I don’t want to know if anyone has, I think you’re crazy.”
And that’s when dear Leo announced it: “I did.”
Dr. Hayhoe attempted to assure the him that she didn’t actually think he was a lunatic, but the president jumped in to mediate the situation. “I think you’ll acknowledge he’s crazy,” he said with a smile.
Whether or not DiCaprio really intends to risk interplanetary travel is unclear, but when you’ve finally won the Oscar you’ve been thirsting after for years, maybe there’s nothing left on Earth to live for.
