The puzzle of hotel identity contains many pieces. There’s the location and the furnishings. There’s the amenities and the service. There’s the dining and recreation options. And then there’s the property’s history.

Historic hotels are hard to beat if you’re looking for a real sense of place. They’re deeply entwined with their environment, simultaneously offering the best of where it’s going and the best of where it has been. These properties blend traditional grandeur with modern comforts, providing charm that’s world’s away from a stay at a homogenised chain hotel.

Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide recently announced the winners of the 2016 Awards of Excellence. The Historic Hotels Awards of Excellence are presented each year to hotels and hoteliers demonstrating innovative leadership, stewardship, and contribution to furthering the recognition, preservation, and celebration of these preeminent hotels and their histories.

In 2016, winners were selected from a pool of 200 nominees. Amongst them are The Mayflower Hotel, where United States President Franklin Roosevelt penned his famous line about fearing fear itself, and Switzerland’s Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern, which claims Mark Twain and Winston Churchill on its list of famous guests.

“We are proud to congratulate the 2016 Historic Hotels Awards of Excellence winners,” said Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Director of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. “These historic hotels and hoteliers represent the pinnacle in historic hotels and their achievements. Their dedicated stewardship and innovative leadership helps ensure that these legendary historic hotels and their wonderful histories will continued to be enjoyed by future generations of travellers.”
