Mid-century design giant Herman Miller is making its first foray into the realm of brick and mortar retail this week with a brand new flagship in New York City.
Located at 251 Park Avenue South in Manhattan, the store’s floorplan is arranged to resemble a modern home. Each area represents a different room, showcasing stylish and problem-solving designs for living, working, dining, sleeping, and socialising. The displays and inventory represent a blend of current and vintage Herman Miller furniture, lighting and accessories, as well as a range of complementary products from brands around the world.
“The New York flagship represents the first time in our history that the variety and versatility of our total offering has come together in a single location,” said Herman Miller Executive Creative Director Ben Watson. “Herman Miller and its family of brands are unique in the strength and breadth of their offer. By bringing to life this singular flagship experience, we hope to inspire all our visitors to imagine better places for working and living.”
The Michigan-based manufacturer has built a loyal following of mid-century design fans over more than 80 years. Yet despite its success, its products have only ever been available online and in showrooms. A retail hub was never part of the company’s plan, until now. Executives hope the NYC flagship will help expand the brand’s audience beyond its loyal core.
“The folks who know us and love us will be visiting, but we’re also really excited to introduce ourselves to those who may not know Herman Miller the brand, but know our pieces,” said Linda Choong, Herman Miller’s vice president of consumer business.
The bi-level store is indeed every Herman Miller enthusiast’s dream. The space is bright, open, and inviting, packed with fan-favourite pieces like Aeron chairs, Eames chairs, and Bolster sofas. Accompanying the furniture is a variety of well-matched accessories ranging from bedding to children’s toys. We’d happily curl up in a corner and call it home.
