When we first met Kevin, James McAvoy‘s psychotic and sadistic character in Split, we knew we were in for something twisted. With the release of the film’s second trailer, things look even more sinister.
The normally charming Scotsman is neither Scottish nor charming (or, for that matter, normal) in Split, the latest outing from writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan. McAvoy’s Kevin is a creepy kidnapper who has 23 distinct personalities – and a beastly 24th, one that can dominate all the other personalities and is ready to wreak havoc, waiting to be unleashed. Kevin, his psychiatrist, and the audience will all discover the depths of madness he can reach when he abducts three teenage girls.
The second trailer introduces us to more of Kevin’s personalities and establishes the many threats they pose to the young women. Each personality presents its own challenge as the girls try to escape – some are violent, some are too immature to help, others know more than they’re letting on. McAvoy looks magnetic in each role, perhaps heralding one of the most memorable performances of his career so far.
Split could also be the return to form for Shyamalan that fans have been yearning for. After a string of disappointments, followed by the promising The Visit in 2015, we could be looking at a renaissance for the twistmaster. John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that “genre fans should embrace what is arguably the director’s most satisfying picture since The Sixth Sense.”
Split is set to scare audiences around the world in cinemas in January 2017.
