As much as we love solo travel, there’s one companion few of us would dare leave home without: our smartphone. That most beloved of travel buddies has become our number one source of connection, and Instagram is our go-to app for sharing our #wanderlust with the world.
To mark the end of 2016, Instagram has released its annual Year In Review data, revealing the destinations that have graced the most bucket lists this year.
The Big Apple scored big. New York City was not only the most geotagged city of 2016, it’s also home to three of the world’s top ten most Instagrammed places: Central Park, Times Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge. London came in second in the cities race, followed by Moscow, São Paulo, and Paris rounding out the top five.
As for the most Instagrammed locations of the year, theme parks proved hard to beat. The global empires of Disney and Universal Studios secured the top two spots. New York City was the next big winner, with the three listed above, followed by Paris with two iconic sites: the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.
Instagram also revealed the most popular hotels of the year. Las Vegas was the clear king of the hospitality industry with a whopping five of the top ten spots, including number one, the MGM Grand. The remaining spots went to hotels in five other notoriously glamorous places: New York City, Dubai, Miami Beach, Ibiza, and Macau.
You’ll find the top ten in each of those three categories above, plus more of 2016’s most Instagrammed places here.
