You’ll know him as the blonde dude who got beat to a bloody pulp by Edward Norton in Fight Club. You’ll know him as the guy who most recently took the reins as the Joker from the late Heath Ledger.
That’s right, this guy. No less than a week after the passing of the Playboy magnate, actor Jared Leto has been confirmed to play the man in the robe in the upcoming official Hugh Hefner biopic. The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter who also spoke to the film’s director, Brett Ratner, who said that “Jared is an old friend”.
“When he heard I got the rights to Hef’s story, he told me, ‘I want to play him. I want to understand him.’ And I really believe Jared can do it. He’s one of the great actors of today.”
Of course it would be foolish and insensitive to assume that this all came together in the past week as Ratner has had his sights on this project since the beginning of the year. Prior to that the rights to the film had passed numerous studio hands before being purchased by Ratner.
Other mega stars who had been earmarked to play Hefner included Robert Downey Jr. but the role was eventually given to Leto. Whilst he is talented, Leto never got to meet Hefner even after numerous attempts earlier in the year due to the 91-year-old’s poor health.
Nonetheless, Ratner is throwing his faith behind Leto insisting that, “There’s enough footage on Hef out there that Jared will be able to get as much information as he wants.”
It’ll be interesting to see who they cast Marilyn Monroe as. Could a Margot Robbie-Jared Leto reunion be on the cards? Stay tuned.
