2017 was a busy year for Balenciaga and Gucci. The two Kering-owned brands waged a fierce war for the hearts and minds of the fashionable, jostling for position on the Lyst Index’s quarterly report of the industry’s trendiest names. After a valiant fight, the latest index revealed the final standings of 2017, and the crown goes to…
Gucci. Though Balenciaga made a strong showing in the second half of 2017, the year ultimately belonged to the Italian behemoth, which consistently ranked in the top three brands every quarter of the year.
Business of Fashion chalks Gucci’s success up to discoverability and accessibility. The brand added 8 million followers to its Instagram account last year, and successfully cultivated relationships with creatives such as Coco Capitan, Petra Collins and Helen Downie. The brand also appointed “a committee” of millennial advisors under the age of 30, announced a collaboration with Dapper Dan, and launched an eclectic line of home furnishings and treatments dubbed Gucci Décor.
Perhaps most impressively, Gucci was so omnipresent that people searched the brand’s name on Lyst more times over the course of the year than they did the generic terms “shoes” and “dresses.”
The Lyst Index ranks the world’s hottest brands and top-selling products each year, tracking 4.5 million data points per hour from over 70 million annual consumers, five million products, and 12,000 brands. Below you’ll find the final rankings of 2017. Visit Business of Fashion for a full analysis of the results.
