Massive news from the global fashion scene today with LVMH announcing that Off-White designer Virgil Abloh has come on board as Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of menswear.
Abloh and his Off-White brand are a global force in the streetwear scene but before that the American designer rose to prominence as Kanye West’s creative director. He most recently released a range of collaborative sneakers with Nike which have gone on to become some of the most sought after kicks in the world today.
Whilst Abloh’s arrival at Louis Vuitton had been rumoured in recent months, it’s the stellar legacy that he takes over from predecessor Kim Jones that will be the most interesting development. Jones was the brains behind the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration which saw the luxury European brand break into a lucrative new market.
Can Abloh recreate this same hype whilst adding his own touch of Off-White magic? Only time will tell.
“I feel elated. This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start,” Abloh said in a statement.
