In a move that surprised no-one, Ben Simmons has made NBA history by becoming the first ever Australian (and the third non-American) to claim the prestigious Rookie of the Year award, bringing his record-breaking season to a fitting end.
Although some fans had hoped for a different outcome (Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Boston’s Jayson Tatum also came close to getting the accolade), no one can deny Simmons’, who has made headlines a number of times this season, worked hard both on and off the court for the award.
As great as Ben Simmons might one day be, Donovan Mitchell deserved rookie of the year. HE turned the Jazz into something nobody saw coming – a playoff team that knocked out OKC.

“I’d like to thank my family … my teammates, my great coach and the city of Philadelphia for really embracing me,” Simmons said in his acceptance speech. Then, “Despite months of back and forth between the two, Simmons and Mitchell came together and shook hands” (News.com).
