She can dance like a white boy, she can ask the tough questions with a smile and she can make people laugh. And now Ellen Degeneres can add another accolade to her impressive repertoire – the proud owner of a $175,000 Rolex Paul Newman Daytona Reference 6241.
According to a past Hodinkee sale, the highly sought after Paul Newman Daytona timepiece was a bit of a dark horse back in its debut days. It featured a white dial with black sub-registers, push-down chronograph buttons and a striking black acrylic bezel. These “exotic” appointments weren’t looked highly upon back in 1969 and the model sat dormant on the shelf for years until the 1980s before Italian collectors discovered them and gave them the nickname of Paul Newman Daytonas after seeing a picture of the actor rocking one.
Fast forward more than 30 years and the watch is now one of the most lucrative vintage Rolexes to ever hit the market. And here we have talk show host Ellen DeGeneres casually flinging one around on her wrist in the third episode of Netflix’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee.
The premise of the show is exactly what you think it is. Jerry Seinfeld, a comedian, meets up with Ellen DeGeneres, another comedian, to chat about everything from how the talk show host got her start in comedy, to family, horses, and taking fashion advice.
More importantly the vintage Rolex is paired with a period correct car when Seinfeld picks up DeGeneres in a 1977 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. You can’t see the Rolex in the video below but you can see what the pair get up to.
This wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity has shown off their finest watch collection to the public. David Beckham recently wore a $55,000 watch with a basic white tee in Tokyo whilst Floyd Mayweather went all out with an $18 million diamond encrusted watch.
