‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor is larger than life: the ‘retired’ MMA fighter might be out of the fight game but his aggressive personality and love of fitness haven’t reduced one bit.
The Irish celebrity athlete has been training hard all year, completing a 180km water-cycle trip from Corsica to Monaco in support of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, sweating it out across the Mediterranean with the eponymous European royal for charity earlier this month.
He hasn’t put his foot off the gas since, sharing a photo of him in a Monaco gym today wearing a white Dolce & Gabbana t-shirt, Reebok Legacy Lifter II weightlifting shoes, Apple AirPods and striped short shorts.

While we wouldn’t recommend donning swim shorts for a stint at your local F45 – swim shorts are nowhere near as flexible or breathable as proper gym shorts – short shorts are making a comeback when it comes to fitness fashion. Maybe it’s because short shorts show off your quads, or because they inherently provide better ventilation than longer options. In any case, it’s very 80s (and looks admittedly cool).
More and more men have taken to wearing shorter shorts this year too, we’ve noticed, perhaps in an effort to show off their quads.
McGregor does demonstrate something that any keen weightlifter should pay close attention to: making sure you have appropriate footwear. Purpose-built weightlifting shoes like his Reeboks have very flat soles and a raised heel, which help you perform more stable and deeper squats. The over-the-lace straps also provide additional midfoot support for additional performance.
Earlier today McGregor also shared a photo on his Instagram story of him at the breakfast table on a boat (wearing the same swim shorts, so maybe he swam to the gym?) subtly flexing a $55,350 18ct gold Rolex Day-Date 40 – a fancy watch indeed, but far from the most expensive watch he owns. He’s got plenty of Jacob & Co., Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet pieces, as well as lots of ‘Rollies’. Check out this $200,000 bedazzled Rolex Daytona he took jetskiing…
