The Macallan's 60-Year-Old Whisky That Will Set You Back $700,000

Chump change.

The Macallan's 60-Year-Old Whisky That Will Set You Back $700,000

Two exceptional bottles, one terrifying price tag. The Macallan Peter Blake 1926 60-Year-Old and The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-Year-Old are heading to auction and they’re expected to fetch between HK$3.6 – HK$4.6 million (AU$596,000-US$759,000) when they go under the hammer at Bonhams on May 18.

Bottled in 1986 as 24 examples (12 for the Blake and 12 for the Adami), the dynamic duo of the whisky world feature vintage labels designed by acclaimed pop artists Peter Blake and Valerio Adami. Blake is the man credited for creating the Beatles’ album cover for Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band whilst Adami is renowned for his abstract images in bold black lines. They also come complete with cabinets that mimic the brass and glass distillery spirit safe designs.

“These bottles are incredibly rare,” says Daniel Lam, the head of fine wine and whisky at Bonhams in Hong Kong.

“The exceptional calibre of the whisky combined with the wonderful artwork from two towering figures of 20th century pop art – Peter Blake and Valerio Adami – represent a unique marriage of excellence.”

“Only 24 of these bottles were produced and the sale is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors to acquire the holy grail of Macallan.”

This latest round of expensive vintage whisky is further proof that whisky investment funds and whisky cryptocurrencies are here to stay.
