The skies of the future have been revealed with Airbus Helicopter’s latest creation aptly codenamed the ‘Racer’.
Looking like something out of a science fiction film, the helicopter sports twin propellers attached to ‘box wings’ on either side of the body. This enables the Racer to reach cruise speeds of over 400km/h whilst utilising the latest sustainable technology in the Clean Sky 2 European research program.
According to Airbus Helicopters CEO Guillaume Faury, the craft is more than just a concept and the first example of what’s possible in terms of high-speed air transport that is also cost efficient and sustainable.
“This new project, pulling together the skills and know-how of dozens of European partners through the Clean Sky 2 initiative, aims to bring increased speed and range at the right cost, thanks to a simple, safe and proven aerodynamic formula. It will pave the way for new time-sensitive services for 2030 and beyond, setting new benchmarks for high-speed helicopter transportation.”
Assembly of demonstrator Racers will begin in 2019. Until then start saving your coinage and watch the video below.
