With the world slowly going back to normal after a global pandemic, most of us are starting to, or already have returned to the office. And there’s nothing better than a fresh new work wardrobe to get you motivated for those 9 to 5’s.
But there are many things to consider when purchasing work clothing. A dress shirt paired with work pants and a blazer may suffice, or you may need a suit and tie… This is all dependent on your occupation and/or your office’s dress code.
Different work clothing dress codes
Business casual is a dress code reserved for offices and jobs where you can get away without wearing a tie; such as agencies, education, finance, etc. Dress shirts, trousers, blazers, tailored sweaters, and dress shoes are all you’ll need to build the perfect business casual wardrobe.
Business formal is exactly that; formal. Not as formal as a black-tie event, of course, but formal enough that a suit and tie are a must. These days there are very few jobs where this dress code is still enforced, but if you are in an industry where business formal’s still required, such as law or investment banking, read on. To build a work wardrobe that’s suitable for business formal dress codes you’ll need dress shirts, suits, ties, pocket squares, cufflinks, and dress shoes.
Work clothing FAQs
How many business shirts should I own?
You should own a minimum of five; one for each day (although we recommend getting a few more than five so you can rotate them regularly and not wear the same five shirts every week). White is a must-have colour, as well as light blue. Once you own the basics, then play around with prints and colours to shake up your office looks.
How many work pants should I own? And what colours should I get?
If you’re working full-time you should own at least three pairs of work pants that you can rotate. However, if you’re a man who’s always pressed for time, get five pairs of pants; one for each day, so you never have to worry about having enough time to get your pants to or from the dry cleaners.
We recommend owning at least one or two classic block colours like black, navy, or grey, as they're timeless and will go with any and every shirt. If you wear work pants regularly and want to branch out (but you're still a tad apprehensive of rocking, say, a hot pink work pant) experiment with plaid prints in navy or grey.
