Cast & Crew

Just like the 2017 film adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, Death On The Nile is directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also reprises his role as iconic Detective Hercule Poirot. Branagh is a five-time Academy Award nominee who has directed Thor, Cinderella, Hamlet and, most recently, Belfast.

Death On The Nile will also star Gal Gadot of Wonder Woman fame and Call Me By Your Name actor, Armie Hammer as newlyweds Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle and Simon Doyle. Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Rose Leslie, Ali Fazal, Emma Mackey and Letitia Wright, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders also star in the film.

The Plot

Death On The Nile is based on the 1937 book of the same name by legendary author Agatha Christie and is one of her most famous works, deliciously centred around crime, jealousy, and betrayal.

Christie’s travels to Egypt inspired Death On The Nile, which picks up shortly after Murder On The Orient Express and follows Hercule Poirot, played by Branagh, whose vacation in Aswan is cut short when one of the passengers on the S.S Karnak is murdered. The glamorous river steamer excursion quickly turns into a terrifying search, in which Poirot must identify the killer before they strike again. The story is filled with wicked twists that will leave audiences guessing until the very last second.

What The Critics & Reviews Say

You may notice in the Death On The Nile trailer, that despite a prominent role, Armie Hammer is hardly featured. In fact, the most recent trailer seems to heavily focus on the film’s other stars, Branagh and Gadot; perhaps to negate Hammer’s presence in the movie in light of his recent controversy. Hammer’s fall from grace was fueled by numerous rape and abuse allegations made by several women, which surfaced in January 2021.

In June, Hammer checked into rehab and was dropped from his talent agency WME and numerous productions, including a rom-com alongside Jennifer Lopez and a Paramount series serving as a prequel to The Godfather in the wake of these allegations.

When the latest trailer for Death On The Nile dropped, it garnered plenty of criticism online from fans, with many taking to Twitter voicing their outrage on the decision not to recast Hammer.

Despite the criticism, Disney’s decision to keep Hammer in Death On The Nile may have been due to the numerous delays in the production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recasting and reshooting just might not have been a feasible option.

With so much controversy surrounding the film, it’s unsurprising that Death On The Nile received average reviews; it currently has an IMDb score of 6.3.

Australian Release Date
