The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen isn’t the most subtle of motor vehicles in standard trim. It drives like a mini truck with massive power derived from a 5.0 litre V8 (AMG variants get twin turbos) or an insane twin turbo V12 version.
As an iconic off-roader that has been going strong for a good 37 years, the hand built beast has evolved over the decades to handle lavish appointments as well as it does military duties. And now they’ve handed it over to the luxury purveyors over at Maybach to tinker with.
What you see before you is the very first Maybach variant of the G-Wagen known as the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet. The most noticeable feature is an electric convertible soft top which does a fine job of letting your rear seat posse be seen as they roll on by all the plebs below.
Other Maybach standard appointments include a stretched wheelbase of 22.7-inches to accommodate the fully reclinable rear massage seats. For privacy there’s a centre partition glass whilst the seats are quilted in beautiful tan leather. There’s also hot/cold cup holders, foldable tables and two 10-inch screens.
Given that Maybach rarely do things in halves, they’ve gone for the top-of-the-line Biturbo V12 package which affords this unassuming sun cruiser a very unnecessary 630hp and 1,000Nm of torque.
To help drive over traffic in heavy congestions, the G650 is equipped with 22-inch wheels. Keen to have one in your garage? There’s no pricing details yet but the standard G-Wagen will already set you back well over AU$200,000 so expect to add a bit more for this Maybach-tweaked version.
