Richard Mille's New Watch Rivals The Cost Of A Home

Correction: An affordable home by today’s major city standard. Nonetheless at a cool US$980,000, the Richard Mille RM-05-03 bears all of the hallmarks of highly coveted timepiece not for the faint of hearted.

As a collaboration between its partner and racing powerhouse, McLaren F1, the actual name for the watch is a mouthful: RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1.

What it makes up in words however it drops in weight as the world’s lightest split seconds chronograph – a master stroke in mimicking McLaren’s achievements in technical innovation.

Inside the watch punters will find a manually wound tourbillon movement which drives the hours, minutes and a split-seconds chronograph with a 30-minute totaliser.

The 44.5mm x 49.65mm case itself is a unique piece of innovation drawn from McLaren’s expertise alongside the University of Manchester with a material called Graph TPT. It’s a combination of Graphene bonded to layers of carbon fibre to achieve the RM-50-03’s record breaking weight at 40 grams including the strap.

Thinking of selling the house for one of these bad boys? Better think quick. Only 75 examples of the RM 50-03 will be made available to Richard Mille boutiques around the world.

See how it’s crafted in the slick video below.
