Succession actor Nicholas Braun has spoken about the upcoming fourth and final season of the acclaimed HBO series, and the potential of a spin-off show centred on his character.

Braun, who plays the sweet and clumsy yet opportunistic “Cousin” Greg Hirsch, was at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards where he was asked by Entertainment Tonight about the big announcement that season four of Succession will be the last.

“That was kind of a big one,” said Braun. “We were expecting it while we were making the show, but you don’t believe it till Jesse [Armstrong, series creator] says it. We’re all pretty bummed.”

“I was sad as hell on my last day. I finished a couple weeks ago, and it was really a tough day, you know, saying goodbye to everybody. It’s been the greatest working experience of my life. So, saying goodbye to those people was really tough.”

Braun also said that he and his Succession co-stars – Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen, Kieran Culkin, and Alan Ruck – were not sure what was in store for their characters until they sat down for a table read. “We had an idea… None of us read the script before it came to us, a table read draft came to us, so we didn’t exactly know how it was gonna end. Anyway, the ending is fire.

Braun also said that his character, who is the resident whipping boy in Succession, gets “battered around again this season. Some fun stuff.”

It was reported that Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is considering a spin-off show that may potentially follow one of the central characters. When asked if Cousin Greg could be that character, Braun replied: “I think you’ll get all the Cousin Greg and Tom [Wambsgans] you need this season. But of course, I’d play Greg forever if Jesse Armstrong lets me. He’s been a great guy to be inside.”

Braun’s comments come several days after the release of the final and fiery trailer for Succession season four – which will make viewers thankful they are not related to Logan Roy, the aging yet cunning patriarch and CEO of powerful media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, who is described in the trailer as “out of control” and a “barbarian” by his own family.

Cox gives as good as he gets, declaring that he will “kill the opposition” and “cut their throats” with gnarling intensity. Great stuff.

Succession has proven to be a huge success for HBO, receiving overwhelming acclaim for its writing and performances, and winning numerous awards. Season four of Succession will premiere on March 27 on Binge.
